Mean Green Soccer Rallies To Defeat Abilene Christian
Down Two Goals, North Texas Comes Back To Win, 3-2
DENTON -- The North Texas soccer team faced its first adversity of the season on Sunday against Abilene Christian. Down two goals in the opening 10 minutes of the game on a hot, muggy afternoon, the Mean Green rallied to score three goals and take the 3-2 win against the visiting Wildcats.
"Slow starts really don't fit into the system and style we play," said North Texas head John Hedlund. "Credit ACU for going up on us early, especially in our house. If there is a silver lining, we didn't get rattled, kept our composure and strung three goals together for the win."
The Wildcats set the Mean Green back on their heels with two early goals. Danielle Otto scored ACU's second goal of the season in the seventh minute with a shot from outside the 18-yard box that went across the goal into the lower right-hand netting.
ACU's second goal came off a corner kick in the 10th minute. Shay Johnson found the end of Chloe Fifer's corner kick and placed it into the back of the net.
Lauryn Bruffett came off the bench to score the Mean Green's first goal in the 22nd minute with a long shot from outside the box that went over the goalkeeper's head.
The Mean Green began to find more opportunities following Bruffett's goal. Brittnye Loewen hit the post from close range in the 24th minute, and then Marchelle Davis hit the crossbar with a hard shot off a free kick.
The Mean Green came out of the locker room and scored two quick goals at the start of the second half to regain the lead. Flobeck tied the game with a header off a Tori Phillips free kick. Marchelle Davis had her first gamewinner of the season in the 56th minute when she knocked the ball in off a scrum in the box after a corner kick by Phillips.
