Texas Scores A Late Goal Against The Mean Green To Take The Win
Longhorns Defeat North Texas, 1-0
DENTON -- For the second straight year, the North Texas soccer team came up just short against Texas. The Longhorns scored a late goal in the 82nd minute to take a 1-0 victory against the Mean Green on Sunday afternoon at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.
"First of all congratulations to Texas, said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "It was a hard-fought game by both teams, and I just knew it was going to come down to the last few minutes of the game. Unfortunately for us, they knocked in a loose ball in the box and got the winning goal. We're all disappointed in the result, but I loved the girls fight and determination throughout the match." ."
The Mean Green lost 1-0 to Texas last year in Austin off an own goal. For the second straight year, North Texas went toe-to-toe with the Longhorns but were hurt this year off a scramble in the box from a free kick.
The Longhorns earned two straight corner kicks with 10 minutes left to play. Mikayla Flores took a shot on goal after the second corner kick was played in by Katie Glenn. The shot was saved by North Texas goalkeeper Miranda Schoening but the deflection fell to Cyera Hintzen who drilled it into the net.
The best opportunities for North Texas came at the start of the second half. Natalie Newell had a breakaway and was one-on-one with the keeper in the 48th minute but the shot was pushed away by the goalminder.
Aaliyah Nolan also had a dangerous play in the 59th minute inside the six-yard box but the keeper was there once again to smother the ball.
Texas outshot the Mean Green, 21-7, but only six of those shots were on goal.
"Again we're young and sometimes you have to go through a few growing pains, especially to beat Power 5 schools," said Hedlund. "We will watch film tomorrow and learn from our mistakes and move on to our next match."
