Arkansas Snaps Mean Green's Home Winning Streak
No. 17 Arkansas Defeats North Texas, 2-0
DENTON -- The goal post was not the Mean Green's friend on Sunday afternoon. The North Texas soccer team missed a few scoring opportunities, while No. 17 Arkansas tallied two early goals and left Denton with a 2-0 victory.
"We just have to do a better job of finishing our chances," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "We had an early opportunity in the game to take the lead and later had a few one-on-ones with their keeper that would have put us back in the game. To me that was the difference. But we are young and we will learn from it. Arkansas is an outstanding team, very athletic with great size and solid team speed."
In the fifth minute, the Mean Green earned the first corner kick of the game. Taylor Torres sent in a good ball to the far post that was pushed back out to Katie Gernsbacher. The midfielder chipped the ball back into the box, Lauryn Bruffett headed it to the near post and Cat Sebazco sent another low header on goal but it bounced off the post and was gathered up by the goalkeeper.
Haley Vanfossen set up Arkansas' first goal in the 12th minute with a long free kick from the Razorback side of the field. There was a scramble inside the six-yard box and Taylor Malham was able to kick it past a sliding Miranda Schoening.
Just a few minutes later, the Arkansas offense worked the ball down the right side of the field. Stefanie Doyle sent in a low cross across the box, an unmarked Kayla McKeon ran onto the cross and one-touched the ball into the left-hand side of the goal for a second Razorback finish.
The Mean Green regrouped in the second half and took control of the ball for the opening 10 minutes, earning four corner kicks. After the ball was played back out after the second corner kick, defender Tori Phillips sent a long, high pass over the Arkansas defense to a running Torres. The forward raced ahead of her defender and was one-on-one with the keeper. She sent a low shot to the right side of the keeper that bounced off the goalpost and was cleared away by a Razorback defender.
Freshman Ariel Diaz had a final opportunity for the Mean Green in the 70th minute. The forward tracked a long ball to the right side of the field and found herself one-on-one with the Arkansas keeper who had come out of her box. Jordan Harris blocked Diaz's shot to hold off the Mean Green once again.
On a hot afternoon, each team made double-digit substitutions throughout the game.
"We're disappointed in the loss, but it is only going to help us down the road, especially playing nationally-ranked teams," said Hedlund."
