LAS CRUCES, N.M. - It was an up and down day for the North Texas women's golf team as they sit alone in fifth place after the first round at the Price's Give 'Em Five Intercollegiate.
The Mean Green shot an 8-over par 296 and sits 11 shots behind clubhouse leader Baylor after the first 18 holes.
"We had a very indifferent round today," said head coach Jeff Mitchell "We played some outstanding golf at times and we really kind of stunk it up at others. The NMSU University golf course is not hard when you are keeping it in play off the tee. Problem is, we didn't do that as well as we have been."
Kelsey Kipp and Addison Long both shot even-par rounds of 72 and are both tied for 11th place after the first round. Both players are just one stroke outside of the top-10.
Chandra Alexander and Chaslyn Chrismer shot rounds of 4-over par 76 and are tied for 32nd place. Taylor Kilponen and Katie Paxton, playing as an individual, posted 8-over par scores of 80.
"Along with still not having a good putting round, we have put ourselves in a position where we have a lot of work to do," Mitchell said. "I am very pleased with the team in regards to how hard we fought for it, but I am not very pleased about how hard we had to fight. For the rest of the tournament, we have to make sure we are paying attention to good course management decisions and we have to figure out how to make putts on these greens."
The second round of the tournament begins tomorrow from the NMSU University golf course.
