Women's Golf Starts Season Today With Fall Classic

DENTON, Texas (9/15/08) -  A new era of North Texas women’s golf starts today as the Mean Green host the North Texas Fall’s Golf Classic at Robson Ranch.  The tournament features nine teams with the first two rounds being played on Monday and the final round tomorrow.

Head Coach Jeff Mitchell is in his first season at North Texas and has instilled a new look of excitement heading into the fall season.

“I’m really excited about us finally getting to start the season. It seems like its been a long time from the time that I started until now, but we are excited about getting the season underway,” said Mitchell. “The team is extremely excited about the first round starting up and we can’t wait to see what we are going to be able to do this season.”

The Mean Green returns seven players off of last year’s squad but has only one senior. That would be Halli Richards who is going to be counted on heavily this year for North Texas. Richards who has battled injuries throughout her career, is 100 percent entering the year and poised for a big season. Richards had the second lowest stroke average on the team last season.

The season leader in stroke average for North Texas last season was Chandra Alexander. As a freshman last year she burst onto the scene to lead the Mean Green and Alexander is looking for more improvement this season.

Junior’s Jordan Rose, Maggie Noel, Kelsie Gray, and Janna Golden are back with plenty of experience for North Texas. Rose had the third lowest stroke average for the Mean Green last season and the best finish for North Texas last season at the NT Women’s Classic.

Sophomore Kyla Whittley is another young player who looks to benefit from Coach Mitchell’s experience.

Newcomers Samantha Humphrey and Addison Long will provide depth for North Texas heading into the new season.

Results of the North Texas Fall Classic will be posted at the end of each day.
