Women's Golf Tees Off 2017-18 Season Monday In Minnesota
North Texas Opens Minnesota Invitational
WOODBURY, Minnesota - The North Texas women's golf team is set to begin its 2017-18 season with its first tournament of the fall Monday, at the Minnesota Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota at Prestwick Golf Club.
"We are very excited to begin the season in Minnesota," head coach Michael Akers said Sunday. "The field is loaded with great programs. To become a nationally competitive program you have to train like the best, act like the best, recruit against the best and play against the best. We begin year two of transforming this program."
North Texas' lineup comprised of sophomore Elena Kim, junior Sol Lee, junior Sabina Pena, sophomore Lauren Cox and senior Nyca Khaw will open the two-day event on Monday, Sept. 11, carrying through Tuesday, Sept. 12. "Sabina has looked great in practice," Akers continued. "She is helping to change the culture of our program. Sol and Lauren also will prove that hard work pays off. In the short time we have had to prepare, they are sharpening their skills quickly. I am impressed with the distance Nyca has picked up over the summer. We hope that Elena can give us the numbers she produced at the Conference USA championship last spring."
The 54-hole event will open with rounds one and two on Monday, and the third and final round on Tuesday.
The Mean Green will compete against host Minnesota, BYU, East Carolina, Georgia, Kansas, Kansas State, Louisville, Notre Dame, Purdue, USC, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin.
