DENTON, Texas - After shattering nearly every record in the books last season, the North Texas women's golf team is ready to open up the 2011-12 season as they play at the "Mo"Morial Invitational Sunday in College Station.
The Mean Green, fresh off the first NCAA Tournament appearance in school history, returns every player except one from the squad that won a school record four tournaments last season. The "Mo"Morial features eight teams ranked in the NGCA Preseason Coach's Poll.
"We are starting off the year with a real challenge," said head coach Jeff Mitchell. "The field is extremely strong. This will be a great way to get back into tournament golf and start our run at more school records. Last year was exciting and now it is time now to raise the bar even higher. "
Leading the way for the Mean Green is a trio of seniors, Jacey Chun, Addison Long, and Kelsey Kipp. All three players earned all-conference honors last season. Kipp had the lowest stroke average on the team while Long and Chun had the third and fourth lowest.
Sophomore Chaslyn Chrismer played in 10 of the 11 tournaments last year as a true freshman and shot the second lowest round in school history with a 67.
The field in College Station features North Texas, Texas A&M (20), Auburn (18), Coastal Carolina (36), Florida State (35), Kentucky, Michigan State (19), Oklahoma (31), Texas (23), Tulane (24), and UTSA .
The Mean Green won a school record four tournaments last season, had a school record four all-conference players, and Mitchell was named the Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year, the first women's golf coach to win that honor in school history.
