Akers Announces 2016-17 Schedule
North Texas Prepares For First Season Under Michael Akers
DENTON – The schedule for the 2016-17 North Texas women’s golf program was released Thursday, head coach Michael Akers announced.
“I’m very excited to release our competition schedule for the upcoming season,” Akers said. “Scheduling usually occurs one year in advance, so I was limited in what was available, but am very appreciative of the coaches who gave us spots in their events.”
The Mean Green open the fall season at the Red Raider Invitational in Lubbock from Sept. 12-13. They continue at the Johnie Imes, hosted by the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, from Oct. 3-4 before heading to The Woodlands, Texas, to take on a loaded field at the Jim West Challenge. Texas State hosts the University of Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Missouri, Florida State, TCU, Miami, Houston, Notre Dame, UTSA, the Mean Green and others the first weekend of October. North Texas concludes fall competition Oct. 30-Nov. 1 at the Little Rock Classic.
“I believe there are three ‘R’s’ in scheduling for college golf,” Akers continued. “You have rankings, reciprocals and relationships. The relationships I have with fellow coaches basically put us in all the events for this year. In the future I expect rankings to help us as we climb nationally. I am also looking at hosting a premier event at Maridoe that will allow us to reciprocate invitations with some of the top programs in the country.”
The spring component of the schedule kicks off over Valentine’s Day in New Braunfels, Texas, as the Mean Green is slated to compete in the All There August tournament from Feb. 13-14. The team remains in-state, as it travels again to The Woodlands for the Houston Invitational, which features another strong field, with teams from all over the country; Purdue, Kansas State, Tulane, Texas, Texas A&M, TCU, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Florida State, SMU, UTSA, Texas State and Kent State. North Texas then plays The MountainView in Tucson, Arizona, from March 10-12 before returning to the Lone Star State for the All There August Challenge in Galveston from March 26-27. The regular season finishes at the Web.com Invitational in Jacksonville from April 3-4.
Postseason dates are scheduled for April 17-19 in Fort Myers, Florida for the Conference USA Championships, the NCAA Regionals from May 8-10 and the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Sugar Grove, Illinois from May 19-24.
