Cox Qualifies For U.S. Women's Amateur
Lauren Cox Finished Second At -1 In Sugarland Monday
SUGARLAND, Texas – North Texas junior Lauren Cox qualified Monday for the United States Golf Association’s 2018 Amateur by finishing second in the qualifier at Sweetwater Country Club. She fired a one-under 70, finishing just one stroke off the pace at the Cypress Course.
"I am very excited to see Lauren qualify for the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship," head coach Michael Akers said. "She worked very hard leading up to the event. The greens had been recently aerified, but she realized everyone was playing the same course and she needed to block that out of her mind. We wish her all the best in August at the Championship."
Cox will be competing Aug. 6-12 at the U.S. Women’s Amateur from The Golf Club of Tennessee in Kingston Springs, Tennessee. Players from 23 different qualifying sites will compete in the field of 156 players. After two rounds of stroke play, match play gets underway on Aug. 8 and that portion of the event will be televised on Fox Sports 1.
The Orange, Texas, native led the Mean Green in 2017-18 in scoring average, carding an average of 75.18, a marked improvement from her 2016-17 season (76.8). She had four top-20 finishes, a pair of which were in the top-10, including a tie for fifth at the Conference USA Championships, where she earned all-tournament team recognition. Cox also had the best individual round of the season for UNT, posting a career-low 67 at the Johnie Imes Invitational in the fall. She also earned second team all-conference honors from C-USA.
