DENTON, Texas (5/5/09) Following a season of marked improvement the North Texas women’s golf team has announced its 2008-09 awards. Head coach Jeff Mitchell, in his first season with North Texas, oversaw a Mean Green program that showed improvement each week and closed the year out with the best round of golf for a women’s team since 2002.
Junior Maggie Noel was named the 2008-09 MVP as she had the lowest stroke average on the team and two top-10 finishes.
"Maggie, with two top-10 and four top-20 finishes brought her game every tournament. She worked hard and it showed,” said Mitchell.
That wasn’t the only award Noel brought home as she was named the Most Improved Player of the Year.
"Maggie's stroke average came down over two shots a round and her average finish was improved dramatically” Mitchell said.
The Freshman of the Year went to Addison Long. Right out of the gate Long proved that she had the talent and skills with a sixth place finish in her first tournament at the Division I level. She finished strong as well with a 13th place finish at the SBC Championship.
"Addy had a very consistent and solid year. She is on her way to having a great career at North Texas” Mitchell said.
Long wasn’t done however as she captured the Mean Green Spirit Award which embodies academics, athletics, work ethic, and the team concept. "This award is voted on by the team and me. It speaks highly of Addison and the way she has decided to define herself” said Mitchell.
