MUSCLE SHOALS, Alabama- The North Texas women's golf team currently sits in third place at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament after an impressive eight over-par 296 for round one. The women have four of their five players ranked in the top-25 for the tournament and have a two stroke lead over FIU.
Freshman McKenzie Ralston leads the Mean Green individually tied for sixth place with an even par 72. Ralston got off to a hot start scoring a birdie on her second hole shortly followed by another on her fifth. It wasn't until holes eight and eleven where she recorded bogeys bringing her back down to even for the day. She is only three strokes off the overall leader.
Placing directly behind her teammate is senior Jacey Chun tied for ninth with a one over-par round one. Chun had a rough time opening tournament play by getting two bogeys within the first four holes. She did bring in five birdies on her scorecard and never reached higher than two over.
Sitting tied for 12th and at three over-par 75 is Kelsey Kipp. Kipp scored as low as one under-par but a few bogeys finished her out at three over. Another senior, Addison Long finished in the top-25 tied for 22nd. Long was even par through 11 holes until shooting a four over on hole 12. She then bounced back to birdie the next and bogey the 18th.
Finishing out the rest of the team for North Texas was Chaslyn Chrismer. Chrismer shot an 11 over 83 for round one and sits in 47th place.
No. 44 Denver leads all teams with an even par round one. Round two gets back underway tomorrow and the third and final round on Wednesday. You can follow all the action live on golfstat.com
