MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – Taylor Kilponen is tied for sixth place and so is the North Texas women’s golf team after the first round of the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Championship. Kilponen shot a 1-over par 73 and North Texas as a team fired a 20-over par 308 and is in a tie with South Alabama after 18 holes.
FIU holds the first round lead at 10-over par 298 after 18 holes at the Robert Trent Jones “Fighting Joe” course.
Kilponen tied her season-low with a 1-over par 73, but after the first four holes that did not seem likely. Kilponent was 3-over par after the first four holes, but she bounced back to play the final 14 holes at 2-under par with three birdies. She is only two strokes off the lead after the opening round.
Freshman Georgina Mundy is tied for 13th place after battling her way to an opening round of 76. Mundy had back-to-back birdies on the 9th and 10th holes and notched seven straight pars to close her round out.
McKenzie Ralston shot an opening round of 7-over par 79 and is tied for 31st place. Chaslyn Chrismer is one stroke off with a first round of 80 while Brooke Bailey posted a first round of 85.
