North Texas Wins Islander Classic With Strong Finish

ROCKPORT, Tex. (3/15/05) Led by junior Andra Lancaster’s third round 73, the North Texas women’s golf team surged past McNeese State in the final round to win the Ed Hicks Imports Islander Spring Classic by ten strokes.


The Mean Green shot a final round of 306 and had two of the top three individual finishers to win its second tournament of the season.


“This was a really good tournament for us. The girls are really starting to understand everything and things are starting to come together for us,” said North Texas head coach Cindi Padgett. “I’m really proud of the way the girls continued to battle and it’s a nice way to go into the break with a win”.


Freshman Lauren Cheves finished tied for second place with a three round score of 233. The second place finish is the best of the season for Cheves and marks the fourth top-five finish of the year for Cheves.


Lancaster fired the low round of the day with a 73 and finished tied for third place individually with a three-round score of 234.


Junior Jaclyn Golden ended tied for sixth place just one shot behind Lancaster with a three-round total of 235. Golden fired back-to-back rounds of 77 and collected her second straight top 10 finish of the season.


Freshman Halli Richards closed strong with a final round of 77 and shot a three round score of 245.


North Texas returns to action on April 4-5 at the Utah Dixie Classic from St. George, Utah.
