Long Leads Mean Green Into Lead At Islander Classic

Round One Recap

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (3/1/10) - Addison Long followed yesterday's team-high round of 76 by shooting a 73 on Monday at the Islander Classic and at the same helped the Mean Green women's golf team jump into a first place lead heading into the final round on Tuesday.

As a team North Texas shot a tournament-best round 299 and will open play tomorrow with a three shot lead (615) over second place Tulsa and Oral Roberts (618).

Long (+5, 149) moved into second place individually and is only three shots back of leader Kirsten Spittler of Sam Houston St. (+2, 146).

Every other participant from North Texas improved upon their opening day rounds, including sophomore Kelsey Kipp. After shooting a 78 on Sunday, Kipp moved into a three-way tie for eighth place with a 75 on Monday.

Jordan Rose (74), Janna Golden (79) and Maggie Noel (77) rounded out the scoring for North Texas on day two.

Junior Chandra Alexander, who is playing this tournament individually, shot a tournament low round of 70.

"The weather cooperated today and we took advantage of it," North Texas head coach Jeff Mitchell said. "Addison continued her great play and Kelsey and Jordan were solid. As a team we did a really good job of learning more about the golf course and making adjustments. The forecast for tomorrow is for more wind, hopefully we can continue to adjust."

Tomorrow's final round will begin at 8:30 a.m.
