Mean Green Conclude Fall Season In Mexico
Akers Sees Growth As Program Heads Into Spring Play
CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico - The Mean Green wrapped up the fall season with the third and final round of the Battle at the Beach at Club Campestre San Jose Sunday. The quartet of Mean Green golfers competed as individuals in the tournament. Sophomore Lauren Cox led the way for the Mean Green, shooting a 5-over on Sunday to finish at 15-over for the event.
"Mexico was a great learning experience," head coach Michael Akers said. "The golf course and course conditions were unlike anything we have seen. Overall this program has improved dramatically in the past 18 months. We have improved 99 spots in the rankings and about 51 shots per tournament. We will be developing and getting technical in the offseason. We are working hard to add an additional player for the spring. This will help with our depth and create a competitive situation in practice."
Cox birdied twice, on holes two and three, while adding pars on 10 holes. Junior Sol Lee and senior Nyca Khaw finished at 19-over for the tournament. Lee birdied on three straight holes Sunday, but had trouble elsewhere, especially on the par-5 seventh hole, where she carded a 12. Khaw birdied once Sunday as well to conclude her fall.
The Mean Green return to action for the first event of the spring with The Dickson, hosted by the University of Houston from The Woodlands, Texas, on Feb. 26-27.
