Khaw Leading Way For Mean Green At Battle At The Beach
North Texas Opens First Round Of Final Fall Tournament Friday
CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico - Senior Nyca Khaw led the way for the Mean Green during the opening round of the Battle at the Beach at Club Campestre San Jose. The quartet of Mean Green golfers competing are all doing so as individuals.
"This event is a great learning opportunity for us," head coach Michael Akers said. "The golf course has a type of grass that most of our players have never seen. The course is very challenging. One of the par 4's is playing 435, and I have never seen a par 4 that long in women's college golf. This event is great for recruiting. I received some feedback regarding how exciting the tournament looks. It is a great experience for oue student-athletes and they will remember this trip for a long time."
Khaw leads the four North Texas golfers in a tie for 51st in a loaded field after carding a 5-over 76 Friday. She birdied the 14th hole and parred 11 other holes on the par-71 course.
Sophomore Lauren Cox was 7-over and sits in a tie for 64th place. She parred 13 holes during her first round.
Fellow sophomore Elena Kim and junior Sol Lee are each tied in 70th at 8-over par. Kim birdied on three occasions, on the seventh, 13th and 15th holes, respectively.
The Mean Green return to action with the second round Saturday, starting at 8:30 a.m. CT. Follow along live tomorrow with live results here, courtesy of BirdieFire.
