Cox Sits Fourth At Two-Under After Day One In San Antonio

Oct. 22, 2017

SAN ANTONIO - Sophomore Lauren Cox sits in a tie for fourth after a strong opening round of 70 on day one at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational at Briggs Ranch Golf Club. The Mean Green are in 10th at 12-over par after combining to shoot 300 Sunday.

"Our sophomores came through today, but we needed two more scores," head coach Michael Akers said. "I am sure Sol [Lee] will rebound and play well the next two days. We are in a good position to move up the leaderboard. This event is set up for us to move up in the rankings and we need to take advantage of the opportunity."

Cox birdied on six occasions, doing so on three of her first six holes. She birdied five, nine, 11, 13 and 16, while posting pars on 10 holes as well. She is four strokes off the pace of the tournament leader, Kansas State's Connie Jaffrey (-6).

Fellow sophomore Elena Kim also had a strong day, posting a two-over 74. She sits in a tie for 27th after the first round. Kim birdied four times, on three consecutive holes (four, five and six), as well as the par four 10th hole.

The Mean Green return to action with the second round Monday, starting at 8:30 a.m. CT. Follow along live tomorrow with live results here, courtesy of BirdieFire.
