Mean Green Finish Strong at Johnie Imes

Oct. 4, 2016

COLUMBIA, Missouri - The North Texas women's golf team concluded action Tuesday at the Johnie Imes Invitational at the Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Missouri with a strong performance, finishing the day at +11 and moved up to 13th place with a three day total of 902.

Helping the Mean Green build off of their record-setting round two performance, were senior Eji Kwon, who led the way at one-over-par Tuesday, sophomore Sol Lee, who shot a two-over-par 74 and junior Devin Edwards, who finished with her second best-ever 54-hole performance, going three-over-par in the final round and finished the tournament with a total score of 226 (+10).

"Overall I'm happy when looking at the improvement of our scores," head coach Micahel Akers said Tuesday. "The first round yesterday was pretty rough, but then the comeback in the afternoon was something I've never seen before. It's hard to comprehend that kind of turnaround and I was ectastic with breaking the school record. Today, I was pleased to break 300, but we still have work to do."

Kwon, who set a personal best on Monday in round two with a five-under-par 67, backed up her performance with another excellent day Tuesday. She birdied four times on the day, including a five-hole span with three birdies and a pair of pars. Were it not for a double bogey on her final hole (13), she would have been under par yet again. Her +4 overall finish saw her place in a tie for 21st. Her score of 220 was her third best 54-hole score, and best since the 2014-15 Conference USA Championship, where she shot a 219 and placed in a tie for 14th.

Lee also performed well again for the Mean Green, and like Kwon, could have set a personal best were it not for the difficult start in round one. Her +2 performance Tuesday lifted her into a tie for 42nd place individually.

Edwards was the most consistent of the Mean Green golfers, shooting a 76, followed by back-to-back 75's. Edwards best performances as a sophomore in 2015-16 were a pair of 77's, and her career best single-round was a 72 as a freshman.

The Mean Green are back in action with the Jim West Challenge, as hosted by Texas State, in The Woodlands, Texas at The Fazio Course at The Club at Carlton Woods.
