Lee Fourth, Cox Shoots 67 On Final Day Of Johnie Imes
Sol Lee Finished Fourth, Lauren Cox Ties For Second-Lowest Round In Program History From Columbia
COLUMBIA, Missouri - Junior Sol Lee finished fourth Tuesday at the Johnie Imes Invitational at The Club at Old Hawthorne after two strong rounds to conclude the event. The Mean Green finished fifth at 19-over par, after firing scores of 289 and 299 in the second and third rounds.
"We are once again seeing progress but need to keep addressing overall issues," head coach Michael Akers said from Columbia. "I don't like the fact that our highest round was our last round. This tournament is a good metric for our overall improvement. We look back to last year and we shot 19 shots better and placed much higher this year."
Lee was fantastic again on Tuesday, posting a two-under 70 in the second round and a one-under 71 in the final round to close her day. Lee birdied three times during her second round and added 14 pars, only bogeying once. In the third and final round, she birdied on three more occasions, parring 13 times.
"Sol [Lee] had an outstanding tournament and was consistent throughout," Akers continued. "Lauren Cox had an incredible second round and we also saw Sabina Pena have a flash of how good she can be. We look forward to a few weeks of preparation for our next event in San Antonio."
Sophomore Lauren Cox had the second-best round of anyone in the tournament when she fired a career-best five-under 67 in the second round. Cox birdied seven times, including back-to-back birdies on five and six, as well as eight and nine. Despite shooting a three-over 75 in her final round, she climbed 39 spots into a tie for 15th, at four-over for the event.
Cox's second round 67 was the best round by a Mean Green golfer this season and tied former Mean Green golfer Eji Kwon (at last season's Johnie Imes Invite) and Chaslyn Chrismer (2010-11) for the second best round in program history, behind Jackie Twamley's 66 in 1988-89.
The Mean Green return to action at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational in San Antonio from Oct. 22-24.
