Mean Green Take Fifth, Lee Posts Top-10 Finish
Sol Lee Finishes Ninth In Manhattan
MANHATTAN, Kansas - Junior Sol Lee finished in a tie for ninth at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational at Colbert Hills Golf Club, posting her first top-10 finish of the season. The Mean Green placed fifth after scoring a team total score of 301 during the third and final round Tuesday. They finished at 42-over on the tournament.
"We feel we should have placed higher in the tournament this week," head coach Michael Akers said. "Round two proved to be the difference. We played 'lift, clean and place' and didn't take full advantage. This week proved to be a good warm-up for our next tournament in Missouri. The golf course and grass conditions are very similar."
Lee finished the final round by carding a three-over 75, putting her at seven-over par for the tournament. The junior birdied twice on the day, on the sixth and 18th holes, respectively. Lee had two top-10 finishes during the 2016-17 season, her first in Denton. Both of those were also ninth place finishes.
Sophomore Elena Kim posted the best day individually for the Mean Green Tuesday, firing a two-over 74. She birdied on two occasions, on eight and 13, and were it not for a double bogey on nine, could have finished higher than her tie for 20th.
Fellow sophomore Lauren Cox matched Lee's day, posting a 75 of her own to finish in a tie for 17th. She had a great day, save for two holes that set her back. She birdied six times, but a pair of triple bogeys offset that success. It was however, Cox's second career top-20 finish. after placing fifth Web.Com Intercollegiate last spring.
The Mean Green return to action with the Johnie Imes Invitational in Columbia, Missouri, from October 2-4.
