Shaddix Has Best Freshman Finish Since 1999
Mean Green Finish In Fourth At C-USA Championship
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Freshman Abbi Shaddix led the North Texas women's golf team to its best finish at a conference championship since 2011 as the Mean Green finished in fourth place at the C-USA Championship.
Shaddix, who finished tied for seventh place, posted the best finish in a conference championship by a freshman since Nina Reis in 1999. The seventh place finish is the best showing by an NT golfer at the conference championship since 2012. She finished the tournament at 1-under par after a final round of 71, a career best.
The Mean Green as a team slipped to fourth place following a third-round of 6-over par, but the fourth place finish is the best since 2011 as a team in a conference championship. MTSU held off FIU to capture the overall team title by eight strokes.
"We may not have had the year we were hoping for, but I am proud of this team and the effort they put in," said head coach Jeff Mitchell. "Eji (Kwon) had a very strong year and Abbi has come a long way in a very short time. As we turn our attention to the future, it is the past and present that will direct us and drive us."
Eji Kwon notched a top-15 finish after a third-round of 1-over par 73. Kwon finished tied for 14th place and finished the season with four top-15 finishes on the season.
Maraea Durie bounced back with a 1-over par 73 on the last day. She had a team-high five birdies on the day and finished tied for 28th place. Devin Edwards ended tied in 28th with Durie after shooting a final round of 77. Nyca Khaw shot a third-round of 78 and finished the tournament tied for 44th place.
The fourth place finish was the best of the season for the Mean Green and the three-round score of 878 was the lowest of the season.
