Mean Green Is Off To Best Start In School History

DENTON (12/31/05) The North Texas women’s basketball team is off to its best start in school history thanks to a 72-59 win against Northwestern State on Sunday afternoon in the Super Pit.


The Mean Green (10-2) snapped Northwestern State’s (7-4) winning streak at three games, but the Lady Demons holds the series record, 17-2.


North Texas jumped out to a 15-4 lead with all the Mean Green points coming from the free-throw line. NT made a season-high 32 free throws in the game, including nine from senior Mian Williams.


Williams led the team in scoring with 16 points. Senior Natalie Mireles joined her in double figures with 13 points, tying a career high. She set the personal best last game against Prairie View A&M.


The Mean Green led by as 15 points in the first half and then used a 27-10 run coming out of the break to take its largest lead of the game, 66-36, with 10:41 left.


Amber Jackson was shy of a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. Talicia Sanders led the team on the boards with 10. She chipped in six points.


North Texas opens conference play on Thursday, Jan. 5 when it faces New Orleans on the road at 7 pm.
