DENTON, Tex. (12/29/07) The schedule might have said it was an exhibition game but the North Texas women’s basketball team didn’t treat it like on. The Mean Green routed the Oklahoma Flyers 79-59 in an exhibition game at the Super Pit.
“This was a nice game for us because we were able to get into a flow out of the long break and stay in game shape,” said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker. “We played well in stretches tonight but you could also see that we still have some areas that we need to improve on and I know that we will before we get back into league play”.
Sophomore guard Brittney James set the tone for North Texas early on as she scored seven of the first 15 points for North Texas in the first five minutes of the contest.
North Texas raced out to a 19-6 lead in the first eight minutes of the game. The Flyers got as close as 10 points at 28-18 with five minutes left in the half before the Mean Green closed the half with a 17-8 run.
James capped off the first half with the play of the night as she hit a half-court shot at the buzzer to send the Mean Green to the break with a 45-26 lead.
The Mean Green picked up where it left off in the second half starting things off with a 13-4 run to pad their lead at 58-30 with 16 minutes left in the game. The Flyers never got any closer than 17 points in the second half to North Texas.
“I was pleased that we were able to get a lot of different players some minutes tonight which I think will pay off for us as we get deeper into conference play,” said Slinker.
Three players scored in double figures for North Texas led by Amber Jackson who scored 17 points and had seven rebounds. James finished the night with 14 points. Jo Hall, who is coming off a career-best 25 points at Denver, notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
North Texas returns to action Sun Belt Conference play on January 3 when they face the Troy Trojans on the road.
