Mean Green Welcome Texas State For Final Non-Conference Game
North Texas Takes On Texas State's Sharp Shooter
DENTON — The North Texas women’s basketball team will play its final non-conference game of the season Thursday. The Mean Green host instate rival Texas State at 5:00 p.m. at the Super Pit. The game can be listened to live on KNTU 88.1 FM and streamed on CUSA.tv.
North Texas (3-7, 0-0 C-USA) returns to Denton for just the fourth time in 11 games. The team has played considerably better in the Super Pit, posting a 2-1 record at home and averaging 71.3 points per game. Thursday, they face the Bobcats (4-6, 0-0 Sun Belt) who have yet to play a school outside of Texas and owns a 1-4 road record.
At home, North Texas is averaging three players in double figures but it’s nearly five with senior Candice Adams and sophomore Terriell Bradley both averaging just barely fewer than 10 points per game at home.
One of those three who are averaging double figures at home is senior Kelsey Criner. In the team’s three most recent games, the point guard has averaged 13.6 points. During this three game stretch, she is also contributing with 4.3 rebounds per game and three steals per game.
Forcing turnovers has been one of the Mean Green’s strongest characteristics this season. North Texas opponents are turning it over at a rate of 20.7 times a game, which is the second highest in Conference USA.
Texas State, though, similarly doesn’t turn the ball over much and forces a decent amount with team defense.
Playing team defense will be important for the Mean Green Thursday, as they will need to slow down Bobcat guard Taeler Deer. The 5-foot-5 junior is a big-time scorer whose 24 points versus Prairie View A&M on Dec. 16 are a single game team-high. She scored 18 of her 24 points in the first quarter of the game. She was a perfect 6-of-6 from 3-point land.
She has scored in double figures 66 times in her career.
North Texas will have a week off before it opens the conference schedule with a home game versus Charlotte on Dec. 30 at 7:00 p.m.
