THIBODAUX, Louisiana - In a back and forth game Nicholls State (6-5) outlasted the North Texas women's basketball 67-64 in overtime at Stopher Gymnasium. Despite the fourth double-double of the season from senior Tamara Torru, Nicholls State used timely free throw shooting in overtime to score seven of their nine points to pick up their fourth straight win.
The Mean Green (7-6) had to climb their way out of a 17-0 hole early in the game against Nicholls State. Sumar Leslie scored eight of her 21 points in the early run to give the Colonels the big lead five minutes into the game. North Texas did not score their first points of the game until the 14:20 mark of the first half.
North Texas battled back though in the first half using a 14-4 run to end the half to cut the Nicholls State lead down to just four points at the break 32-28.
The Mean Green took their first lead of the game at 48-46 on a 3-pointer from Torru with 9:28 left in the game. The lead switched hands four times down the stretch until the final minute of the game. Nicholls State led 58-56 when Brittney Hudson tied the game up with a layup with 41 seconds to play.
The Mean Green forced a held ball with 20 seconds left in regulation and had a chance to win the game in final seconds, but Laura McCoy lost the handle with time winding down and the game went to overtime tied at 58-58.
North Texas never led in overtime as the Colonels took the early lead with two free throws from Leslie. The Mean Green tied the game up at 62-62 with 2:22 in overtime on a basket from Hudson, but Alisha Allen scored with 1:27 to give the Colonels the lead for good.
McCoy tied her career-high with 14 points while Hudson finished with 13 points.
North Texas has an eight-day break and returns to action on December 28 as they open Sun Belt Conference play against the defending league champion UALR Trojans.
