DENTON, Texas (12/20/08) The North Texas women’s basketball team is back home today and looking to remain perfect in Sun Belt Conference play as they host the New Orleans Privateers at 2 p.m.
The Mean Green is coming off its fourth road win of the season, a 57-56 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette to start conference play off. The game can be heard on 88.1 FM KNTU.
North Texas is 1-0 in Sun Belt Conference play for the eighth time in nine seasons of being in the league. The Mean Green can make it 2-0 with a win over New Orleans (4-5, 0-1), which would be the only the third time that North Texas has been 2-0 since joining the league in 2000. Only the 2004-05 and 2005-06 teams went 2-0 to start SBC play.
The Mean Green (5-5, 1-0) held the Ragin Cajuns to just 56 points, the second lowest total allowed by North Texas this season. The magic number for defense this season appears to be 70. North Texas is 4-1 this season when holding its opponent to less than 70 points but just 1-4 when allowing more than 70 points in a game this year.
The Mean Green tied its season-high with 49 rebounds against Louisiana-Lafayette. North Texas has had seven straight games of 40 or more rebounds and over the last five games the Mean Green is averaging 45.2 rebounds a contest. North Texas is the second best rebounding team in the Sun Belt Conference this season.
North Texas ranks in the top 5 of 10 different statistical categories in the Sun Belt Conference. It’s across the board as well as the Mean Green is third in scoring offense, second in rebounding, fourth in 3-pointers, and tied for second in steals per game. Individually Amber Jackson is fifth in the league in scoring and second in rebounding.
