DENTON, Texas (12/15/09) - Behind 20 points by Brittney James, the North Texas women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 69-49 victory against ULM on Tuesday night at the Super Pit.
The Mean Green improves to 4-7 overall and starts Sun Belt play, 1-0. The Warhawks fall to 5-5 and 0-1 in the conference. North Texas has won seven of the last 10 meetings against ULM but trails the overall series, 25-7.
North Texas jumped out to a 26-point halftime lead and never looked back. The Warhawks outscored the Mean Green, 36-30, in the second half but the first-half deficit was too much overcome for ULM. The Warhawks scored the final 12 points of the game.
Behind 56 percent shooting from the field in the opening eight minutes, North Texas jumped out to a 21-7 lead. James scored nine points in that run, moving her into eighth place all-time in points scored at North Texas. She finished the game with 20 points, the eighth 20-point game of her career. The senior has now scored 1,064 points in her career.
North Texas scored 39 points in the first half and held ULM to 13. The 39 points scored is the second-most points the Mean Green has scored in the first half this season and the 13 points allowed is the fewest points that NT has held an opponent to in the first period. James and Jasmine Godbolt combined for 23 of NT's 39 points in the first half.
The Mean Green led by as many as 35 points several times in the second half. Following a layup by Raquel Cuffie that put North Texas ahead, 69-37 with 2:58 left in the game, ULM scored the final 12 points of the game to cut the deficit to 20 points.
The Mean Green shot 44.4 percent from the field and held ULM to 15 of 69 field goals (21.7 percent). ULM made six field goals in the first half.
Dentra Kellum led the team with a season-best 12 rebounds. Cuffie scored in double figures for the second time this season with 11 points.
The Mean Green tied a season best with 14 assists and recorded a season-high 13 steals. NT forced 33 ULM turnovers, tying a season high.
North Texas returns to action when it faces FIU on Sunday, Dec. 20 at 1 p.m.
