No. 4 Texas Overtakes Mean Green In Second Half

DENTON (12/16/04) The North Texas women’s basketball team led No. 4 Texas at half, but the Longhorns made a late run to take the 79-54 victory on Thursday night in the Super Pit.


Texas (5-2) snapped the Mean Green’s perfect 3-0 home record and pushed North Texas back to the .500 mark at 4-4.


Tiffany Jackson scored eight points in Texas’ 13-4 run at the start of the second half that gave the Longhorns a permanent lead, 43-38, with 12 minutes to play. Jackson posted a double-double in the game for Texas with 17 points and 15 rebounds.


 The Mean Green stayed within single digits of the Longhorns before Texas erupted with a 26-5 run to end the game. Jamie Carey led the Longhorns with 30 points, including 19 in the second half.


The Mean Green took its first lead, 22-20, after a Natalie Mireles three-pointer at 7:01. An 8-0 North Texas run followed and was capped by a three-point play from Mia Ajewku that gave North Texas its largest lead of the game, 30-22, with 2:51 left in the first half. Ajewku led the Mean Green with 16 points, including 14 in the first half.


North Texas shot 50 percent in the first half and forced 13 Texas turnovers. In the second period, the Mean Green shot 8-for-24 from the field.


The Mean Green begins a two-game road trip on Monday, Dec. 20 with a matchup against UT Pan American at 5 p.m.
