DALLAS (12/16/02) - The North Texas (4-4) women’s basketball team dropped their second straight game as they fell to the SMU Mustangs 68-64 at Moody Coliseum. Senior forward Angel Lewis scored a career-high 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds but a 10-0 run by SMU (4-2) midway through the second half gave the Mustangs a lead they did not relinquish.
“We had too many turnovers in the second half,” said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker. “We’ve done a good job all season of shutting down our opponent’s top player, but tonight I thought Roberts was great. As a young team we need to learn to stop more than just one player”.
SMU took a 29-26 lead into the half when North Texas opened the second half with an 11-4 run to take a 37-33 lead. The Lady Eagle lead was extended to 43-38 with 12:37 in the game when the Mustangs made their run. SMU’s run was keyed by reserve Shonte Roberts who poured in a season-high 18 points and had six of the 10 points by the Mustangs during the run.
North Texas got as close as 66-62 with 19 seconds remaining, but the Mustangs were able to ice the game from the free throw line.
Junior forward Kim Blanton recorded her second double double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds. North Texas will have two weeks until returning to action against the Baylor Bears on December 30 in Waco.
