DENTON, Texas- North Texas women's basketball improved to 3-0 at home this season, its best start at home since 2007-08, as they defeated Nicholls State 61-56, in a game that featured six lead changes, at the Super Pit on Monday. Denetra Kellum posted her first double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Nicholls State jumped out to an early lead, and the Colonels took a 33-22 lead into the half. The Mean Green responded in the early second half, when a 10-2 run gave North Texas a 41-40 lead at 10:42 of the second half. The Mean Green went ahead for good at the 3:40 mark of the second half with a Tamara Torru jumper that gave North Texas a 56-54 lead.
Denetra Kellum scored 18 points, giving her 15 or more points in five of her last six outings. Kellum's 10 rebounds were a season high, as she posted her second career double-double, and first this season.
North Texas had four players in double figures for the third straight game. Tamara Torru continued her recent hot streak, reaching double figures in scoring for the third straight game. Jasmine Godbolt reached double figures in scoring for the 12th time in 12 games this season, and Brittney Hudson scored 10 points, reaching double digits for the third time this year.
Both Tamara Torru and Jasmine Godbolt added seven rebounds, in addition to Kellum's 10, to help the Mean Green outrebound the Colonels 42 to 30. Torru and Godbolt now have three straight games with 7+ rebounds.
Kosandra Foreman set a career-high with seven assists, her sixth time this season with five or more assists.
The Mean Green finish the non-conference portion off its schedule on December 21 at Arizona, before returning to the Super Pit on December 30 to kick off Sun Belt Conference play against UALR.
