Holmes Named C-USA Freshman Of The Week
Holmes Earns Her First C-USA Honor
IRVING — The Mean Green women’s basketball team’s freshman guard Lauren Holmes was named Conference USA’s Freshman of the Week on Monday.
The Fayetteville, Arkansas, native averaged 14 points per game this week while shooting 45 percent from the field. She had eight steals in the two games combined, including a season-high five on Saturday versus La Salle.
“It’s an honor to be named freshman of the week,” Holmes said. “It’s good to know that my hard work has been paying off. I want to keep working hard for my team to be successful.”
On Tuesday at Indiana, Holmes was held scoreless in the first half as she was limited with a leg cramp. When she returned in the third quarter the Mean Green trailed the Hoosiers by 15 points. Holmes proceeded to score 11 points in the second half and led UNT back from the 15-point deficit to take an early fourth quarter lead.
On defense, Holmes marked Indiana’s all-American Tyra Buss throughout and held her to eight points in the second half as the Mean Green stormed back.
Against La Salle, Holmes led all scorers with 17 points and again defended the oppositions’ leading scorer and held her to six points below her season average.
Holmes drained three 3-pointers in the game and had a Mean Green season-best five steals.
North Texas is off to its first 7-2 start since the 2011-12 season. Holmes’ 11 points per game average is second best on the team and her 5.2 rebound average is third.
Holmes’ 24 steals this season leads the team and are the third most in C-USA.
Of all C-USA freshmen she is second in scoring, second in offensive rebounds and second in 3-point field goals.
Next on North Texas’ schedule is UIC. The Mean Green face the Flames in Chicago on Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. on ESPN3.
