ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (12/9/08) It’s off to the “Land of Enchantment” for the North Texas women’s basketball team as they begin a three-game road trip tonight against New Mexico. The Mean Green is coming off a dramatic come-from-behind victory over Valparaiso on Saturday night to pick up their fourth win of the season. Tip-off tonight is at 8 p.m. from The Pit and the game can be heard on 88.1 FM KNTU.
North Texas and New Mexico will meet for only the fourth time as the Mean Green lead the series 2-1 against North Texas. The two teams last played in 1998, a 66-53 New Mexico win. The previous two matchups were North Texas victories. A 63-59 win over New Mexico started the 1995-96 season for North Texas.
In 1993 the Mean Green went on the road and handed the Lobos a 99-56 loss. The 99 points are still tied for the 5th most in school history.
The Mean Green rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit against Valparaiso to pick up the win. It’s the biggest halftime rally by North Texas since knocking off Western Kentucky last season after trailing by 12 points at the half. Through seven games this season the Mean Green already has two wins when trailing at the half. North Texas had only three the entire season last year.
North Texas is already on a pace to challenge numerous school records this season and one of them is 3-pointers. The Mean Green through seven games has hit 40 3-pointers.
At this same time last year through seven games North Texas had hit on just 22 3-pointers. The school record for 3-pointers in a single season is 134 and during that season through seven games North Texas had hit 32 3-pointers en route to setting the school record.
