DENTON, Texas (12/8/10) - The North Texas women's basketball team snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 75-69 victory against Sam Houston State on Wednesday night at the Super Pit.
The Mean Green improves to 2-8, while the Bearkats fall to 6-4. North Texas extends its lead in the series to 22-12 and ties the season series at 1-1.
Five players paced the Mean Green in double figures. Tamara Torru led the way with 18 points, while Denetra Kellum came off the bench to score 15. Jasmine Godbolt, Brittney Hudson and Kasondra Foreman all added 11 points apiece. Godbolt was one board shy of a double-double.
Sam Houston took its first and only lead of the game, 42-40, at the start of the second half, but Torru hit a three-pointer to give the lead back to North Texas for good. The Mean Green went on a 22-9 run to take back a double-digit lead, 62-51, with 8:47 left in the game. Torru scored eight points in the run.
North Texas shot 42.6 percent in the game, compared to the Bearkats 34.3 percent shooting. The Bearkats turned over the ball 22 times, and the Mean Green capitalized with 27 points.
After falling behind early in its first meeting with the Bearkats, the Mean Green started the game on the right foot with an 8-0 lead. The Mean Green led by as many as 13 points in the first half, 33-20, following two straight baskets by Kellum.
Sam Houston scored eight straight points to cut the lead to two points, 37-35, at the half. It was only the second time this season that the Mean Green has held a lead at the half.
North Texas returns to action on Friday, Dec. 10 when it faces UTPA on the road.
