Ajekwu Scores Career High In Victory

DENTON (12/8/05) Junior Mia Ajekwu scored a career-high 23 points to lead the North Texas women’s basketball team to a 73-55 victory against UT-Pan American on Thursday night in the Super Pit.


The Mean Green won its fourth straight game; its first four-game winning streak since the 2001-02 season. North Texas (6-1) is now a perfect 4-0 against UTPA.


Ajekwu came off the bench to score 23 points on 10-of-11 shooting from the field. She has scored in double figures the last three games. Amber Jackson joined her in double figures with 10 points and chipped in five rebounds.


The Broncs held a brief lead, 7-6, at the start of the game before North Texas jumped out on a 26-7 run that gave the Mean Green a permanent double-digit lead. Senior Mian Williams capped the first-half run with a jumper, giving North Texas a 20-point lead, 36-16, with 3:40 left in the first half.


The Mean Green extended its lead to as many as 19 points in the second half, aided by Ajekwu’s 18 points in the latter period.


Senior Erika Bobo dished out a season-high seven assists in the game and recorded five steals along with nine points. Talicia Sanders led the team on the boards with eight. She scored the team’s first six points and added two free throws to finish with eight points.


North Texas returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 11 when it faces UTEP at 2 pm in the Super Pit.
