Ajekwu Scores 20 In North Texas Loss To SMU

DALLAS, Tex. (12/5/04) In a defensive struggle the North Texas women’s basketball team fell to metroplex rival SMU 60-46 at Moody Coliseum. North Texas was held to only 16 second half points and shot just 14 percent from the floor in the second half.

“This is a frustrating loss because I thought that we could have played much better. They were able to take us out of our offense today and we just couldn’t get much going in the second half” said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker.

North Texas (2-3) raced out to an 11-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game keyed by sophomore Mia Ajekwu who scored a career-high 20 points. Ajekwu also notched her first career double-double with a career-high 12 rebounds.

Erika Bobo extended the Mean Green’s lead to 18-6 with 11:01 remaining in the first half with a basket off the eighth SMU (5-1) turnover in the game’s first nine minutes.

The Mustangs responded with a 19-7 run to tie the game at 25-25 with 3:16 in the half. North Texas closed the half strong with four straight points to hold a 30-29 edge at the break.

The second half saw both teams struggled to get any offense going as SMU climbed out to an early 41-36 lead with 15:05 remaining. North Texas got as close as 44-43 with 7:25 left, but the Mustangs closed the game on a 16-3 run.

North Texas was held to a season-low of 46 points. Bobo scored in double figures for the fourth straight time for the first time in her career with 14 points.

North Texas ended their four-game road trip with a 1-3 record and return home to the Super Pit to begin a three-game homestand on December 8 against the Hampton Pirates.
