Upset Bid Falls Just Short For North Texas
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Despite career-highs from Brittney Hudson and Kasondra Foreman, the North Texas upset bid of Mississippi State fell short 66-60 from Humphrey Coliseum. Playing without leading scorer Denetra Kellum due to an injury, Hudson scored 18 points and Foreman added 15 but the Bulldogs sent North Texas (1-7) to its seventh straight loss.
Jasmine Godbolt had her 11th career double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
With the game tied at 47 and eight minutes remaining, Mississippi State (4-2) made a final push to pull away from the Mean Green. A 10-2 run by Mississippi State gave them a 57-49 lead with 2:34 left in the game.
North Texas closed to within four points, but Diamber Johnson went 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the final minute to ice the game for the Bulldogs.
The Mean Green opened the game with a flurry and taking an eight point lead at 12-4 six minutes into the game. Mississippi State responded with a run of 15-3 to open up a four-point lead at 19-15. The Bulldogs took a two-point lead into the break at 26-24.
North Texas opened the second half like the first half and retook the lead at 41-36 over Mississippi State with 13 minutes left in the game. The two teams traded the lead seven times until the final run by the Bulldogs.
Johnson ended the game with 14 points and Ashley Brown had a career-high 17 points and 15 rebounds for Mississippi State.
North Texas closes out its eight-game road trip at SMU on Tuesday night.
