CORPUS CHRISTI, Tex. (12/3/02) - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi used a 16-1 run midway through the second half to power their way past the North Texas (3-1) women’s basketball team 57-46 at Circle K Court and hand the Lady Eagles their first loss of the season.
The Lady Eagles led 39-34 with 10:37 left in the second half when the Islanders (5-0) began their run that saw Amanda Bryant and Mandie Vick knock down two consecutive three-point shots to run the Islander lead to 50-40 with 4:58 remaining in the game.
North Texas pulled to within six points at 50-44 with 2:50 left in the game but a three-point basket by Anna Hartzell with 1:16 remaining iced the game for the Islanders.
“I thought their defense really threw us off tonight,” said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker. “Coming in we tried to take their post players away and make someone else beat us. Mayby this is a sign of a young team”.
In a defensive struggle North Texas only shot 28 percent from the floor while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi shot just 35 percent on the night.
Kim Blanton led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 12 points and six rebounds. Blanton has now scored in double figures in all four of the North Texas games. Senior post Vilma Grismanauskaite recoded a season-high four blocks and freshman Jamie Armstrong came off the bench to add nine points for North Texas.
The Lady Eagles conclude their five-game road trip in the Fiesta Bowl Women’s Classic Tournament with the first game against Illinois on December 7 in Tucson, Arizona.
