North Texas Battles Past Canisius 81-79 To Move Into Title Game

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (11/29/03) The North Texas women's basketball team held off the Canisius Golden Griffins in the first round of the Time Warner Tournament 81-79 to move into the championship game. The win gives North Texas their third straight 3-1 start to the season.

North Texas saw a 20-point lead evaporate in the second half when the Golden Griffins cut the lead to one-point at 75-74 with 1:59 left in the game. With North Texas leading 77-76 sophomore guard Erika Bobo saved the day for the Mean Green when she came up with a steal with less than 15 seconds remaining off a missed free throw.

Freshman Mia Ajekwu made both free throws to make it 79-76 with eight seconds remaining. Canisius turned the ball over on the ensuing possession and junior guard Jill Medlock iced the game for the Mean Green with two free throws.

North Texas had four players score in double figures led by Medlock with 19 points, seven rebounds and five 3-point baskets. The Mean Green controlled the game from the onset with an early 9-2 run to begin the contest. North Texas extended their lead to 26-11 midway through the first half and enjoyed a 50-36 halftime lead.

The second half saw the Golden Griffins cut into the Mean Green lead but Canisius was never able to get any closer than one-point. North Texas will face the winner of Hofstra-Binghmanton in the title game tomorrow at 2 p.m.
