SAN ANTONIO, Texas (11/28/08) The North Texas women’s basketball team looks to do some feasting of their own as they begin the UTSA Thanksgiving Classic tonight against UTSA. The Mean Green faces off against Charleston Southern tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. to close out the Classic. That game can also be heard on KNTU.
North Texas is playing in the UTSA Thanksgiving Classic for the second time. North Texas played in the classic in 2001 facing off against UTSA and Oklahoma. The Mean Green is playing in just its second tournament in the past three years. North Texas opened the year at the Adidas Winthrop Classic last season.
North Texas hasn’t won a tournament title since winning the SW Texas Century Tel Classic in 2002.
North Texas had 22 steals against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi which tied for the fifth most in school history. It was the most steals in a game for North Texas since in over eight seasons. Not since Feb. 27, 2000 has the Mean Green had that many steals in a game.
Through three games the Mean Green is on pace to torch the old school record for steals in a single season. It’s still early, but the Mean Green is on pace for 415 steals on the year, which would surpass the old school record by 45, set over 21 years ago in 1987-88.
Amber Jackson notched her 49th career game of double figures with 12 points against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. She also picked up her fourth career-double double in the win over UMKC and continued her torrid pace on the defensive end.
Jackson has 14 steals through the first three games and had a career-high six against Tex. A&M-CC.
She moved into the top 10 all-time in rebounds at North Texas and is only 44 points away from becoming the 11th player in school history to score 1,000 points for her career.
North Texas has started the year off at 2-1 for the first time since the 2005-06 season and for the 19th time in school history. The Mean Green has started the year off at 3-1 17 previous times in school history. If history is any lesson, North Texas is in store for a good season. The Mean Green has averaged 16 wins in those 17 previous
