HOUSTON, Tex. (11-21-04) - Despite having four players score in double figures the North Texas women’s basketball team fell to the Houston Cougars 88-65 at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Cougars used a game-high 24 points and 16 rebounds from senior forward Sancho Lyttle to hand the Mean Green its first loss of the season.
“I think that we played well for about 30 minutes today but I we just had a few breakdowns on offense and they were able to capitalize on those,” said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker. “I think the big thing for us was they were able to use there outside shooters to keep us off balance”.
North Texas held a one-point lead at the half 40-39 after getting stellar offensive play from guards Mian Williams and Natalie Mireles. The two combined for four 3-pointers and 14 first half points as the Mean Green shot 51 percent from the floor in the first half.
Senior guard Daphne Andre came off the bench for Houston to score 13 points in the first half to keep the Cougars within striking distance on five-of-six shooting. She finished the game with 19 points.
Trailing 47-45 with remaining in the second half the Cougars took control of the game with an 18-0 run over the next five minutes powered by Lyttle and point guard Joann Overstreet. Overstreet scored six points during the run and dished out a game-high 11 assists.
North Texas got as close as 74-61 with remaining but the Cougars finished out the game with a 14-5 run.
Sophomore forward Kelsie Edwards had a team-high 14 points for North Texas along with eight rebounds. Mia Ajekwu had 11 points and nine rebounds, one shy of a double-double.
Guard Erika Bobo scored a season-high 12 points and had five steals. Mireles scored a career-high 10 points.
North Texas will next be in action on November 27 on the road against Sam Houston State.
