WASHINGTON, D.C. - The North Texas women's basketball team visits the nation's capital Sunday as they face George Washington at 12:00 p.m. The game can be heard on 88.1 FM KNTU from the Charles E. Smith Center. It is the first game for the Mean Green after a seven-day layoff but begins a stretch of five games in nine days.
The North Texas offense through two games has been better than it's ever been scoring 165 points in two games. That's the most points after the first two games of the season for North Texas in 33 seasons. It also marks the second highest point after two games in school history. The Mean Green opened the 1977-78 season by scoring 171 points after two games.
Although very early, the Mean Green is averaging 82.5 points a game. North Texas has averaged more than 70 points a game on the year only seven times before in 34 years of basketball in school history.
Junior guard Alyssa Hankins did something not done in seven seasons for North Texas. Hankins dished out nine assists against Oral Roberts, which is the most assists in a game by a Mean Green player since Heather Trout had nine on March 6, 2003. The Mean Green as a team had 21 assists against Oral Roberts, which is the most as a team since January 3, 2009.
Not to be outdone Kasondra Foreman has 11 assists on the season and through two games the Mean Green has 40 assists on the season. Contrast that to last season when it wasn't until game seven when North Texas had two players with double digit totals for assists. It is very early in the season, but the school record for assists is 459 set in 1985-86.
The Mean Green individually hasn't had a player top the 100 assist mark in a single season since the 2002-03 year, which is seven years, the longest time between 100 assist season.
North Texas knocked down 10 3-pointers against Oral Roberts, which is tied for the fourth most in school history and only one shy of the school record 11. It was only the 11th time in school history that North Texas has hit 10 or more 3-pointers in a game and only the third time since the 2005 season that it has been done. Two of the 11 times have occured in the Shanice Stephens era.
