DENTON (11/18/07) The North Texas women’s basketball team scored a season high in points as the Mean Green defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 83-47, on Sunday afternoon at the Super Pit.
North Texas improves to 3-2 overall, while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi remains winless at 0-4. The Mean Green holds a 5-2 lead in the series against the Islanders.
Three players led the Mean Green in double figures. Brittney James led all scorers with 15 points. Senior Erica Howard had 13 points, and Jo Hall contributed 12. Hall also had a career-high 10 rebounds to along with her first career double-double. North Texas held the edge in rebounds, 44-34.
The Mean Green used a 23-0 run near the end of the first half to take its largest lead, 48-15, with 16 seconds left in the game. The Islanders hit two free throws with one second left to snap the scoreless streak. Five North Texas players scored in the run to help North Texas enter half ahead, 48-17.
The 48 first-half points are the most scored by the Mean Green in the first period since the squad scored 48 against Loyola-Chicago last year. The 47 points scored by the Islanders are the fewest points allowed since Feb. 25, 2006.
North Texas opened the second half with a 13-3 run to stay ahead, 61-20, with 13:08 left in the game. The 41-point lead was the largest of the game for the Mean Green.
Eleven of the 12 North Texas players that saw time contributed points in the win. Lyza Koubiteb came off the bench to score a career highs in points (9) and rebounds (7).
North Texas shot 45.2 percent from the field and was 19-for-37 from the field in the first half. The Mean Green held the Islanders to 35 percent shooting from the field in the game and forced 22 turnovers.
The Mean Green returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 21 when it faces UA-Monticello at home at 7 pm.
