DENTON (11/18/05) Seniors Mian Williams and Erika Bobo scored in double figures to the lead the Mean Green women’s basketball team to a 71-65 season-opening victory against Stephen F. Austin on Friday night at the Super Pit.
North Texas head coach Tina Slinker earned her 200th career victory with the win against the Ladyjacks. She is second in career wins among active coaches in the Sun Belt Conference.
The Mean Green beat Stephen F. Austin for the first time in program history, halting the Ladyjacks winning streak of 25 games. The Mean Green is now 19-11 all-time in season openers.
Williams led all scorers with 18 points, including 10 tallies from the free throw line. Bobo recorded her third career double-double with 15 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. She also dished out a team-high six assists.
The Mean Green converted 31 of 43 free throws in the game, including 20 in the second half. NT’s final 13 points were all made from the charity strip.
SFA held the lead briefly at the start of the second half but was unable to regain the advantage down the stretch. The Ladyjacks came within two points of the Mean Green, 67-65, with 24 seconds left in the game after a three-pointer by Nikki Carr but were unable to make another basket. Williams sank two free throws and Didi Wali made two more to seal the victory.
After SFA took a one-point lead, 41-40, at 14:41 in the second half, North Texas went on a 13-2 run to take a 53-43 advantage. Freshman Tricia Lee gave North Texas its second 10-point lead with a jumper at 9:57 to make the score, 55-45.
The Ladyjacks cut the lead to two points, twice, but the Mean Green defense never let SFA regain the lead.
Fourteen North Texas players saw playing time during the team’s first game. Redshirt freshman Amber Jackson posted seven points and seven rebounds to lead the players coming off the bench. Freshmen Sanetra Jackson and Tricia Lee both recorded five points in seven minutes of action.
North Texas returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 22 against Southern Arkansas at 7 pm in the Super Pit.
