DENTON — Going into the 2014-15 season opener against Houston, the North Texas women's basketball team knew it had to win the turnover battle and keep calm against a tenacious Cougars team. The Mean Green won the turnover battle 30-22, but lost the game in a 46-42 defensive struggle.

In the post-game press conference, head coach Mike Petersen compared the game to a surgery where, "the operation was successful, but the patient died."

But North Texas gets another shot at chalking one up in the win column November 17 at 11:30 a.m. when Northern Colorado comes to the Super Pit. The Bears are coming off a 57-44 win over SMU where they held the Mustangs to 25-percent shooting from the field, including a 2-15 mark from beyond the arc.

Even though the shots did not fall for North Texas on Friday, senior Briesha Wynn is confident that this team will be able to fill up the scoreboard on a regular basis. Last season, the Mean Green was held under 50 points five times, but bounced back well, averaging 65.8 points the following game.

"I think the chemistry is there, it’s all about putting shots in the hole," Wynn explained. "A lot of the shots we took were really good shots. They're the shots that we normally take and the shots that we practice; we just gotta know them down."

Along with Wynn, one player who this team might rely on to knock down a few shots could be junior Teadra Jones. The transfer - who averaged 14 points per game in two seasons at Pensacola State College - tallied 11 points and three steals in her North Texas debut. She came off the bench and played 21 minutes.

"To be honest I was really excited," Jones admitted. "I just wanted to go out there and play hard... I was nervous but my teammates made me feel comfortable."

Last season, the Mean Green traveled to Greeley, Colorado, to take on the Bears. Although they were down by 12 at halftime, North Texas took a one-point lead with 2:22 remaining, but Northern Colorado scored the last seven points of the game for a 75-69 win.
