HUNTSVILLE, Texas (11/15/07) Brittney James scored a game-high 19 points and the Mean Green never trailed on its way to a 68-52 non-conference victory over Sam Houston State University.
Up by 13 at the break, the Mean Green saw its lead shrink down to eight with 7:46 left in the contest. After a timeout, North Texas went on a 13-0 run to stretch its lead to 21 points and seal its second victory of the season.
“”I told the girls that we had to get back to playing solid defense,” said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker. “Our defense stepped up to force turnovers which really helped our offense stretch the lead.”
North Texas shot 39.7 percent from the floor scoring a season-high 68 points. The Mean Green also held the Bearkats to under 30 percent shooting, including two-of-11 from beyond the three-point line.
James, a sophomore from Orange, Texas, pulled down a game and career-high eight rebounds. Amber Jackson was the only other Mean Green player besides James to post double-digit points with 13.
North Texas jumped out to a quick 10-5 lead six minutes into the game. The Mean Green went on an 8-2 run to increase its lead to 11. The Bearkats closed the gap to four with six minutes left in the half, but the Bearkats closed out the half on a 13-4 run to take a 13-point lead into the break.
“I thought we played really well in flashes tonight,” Slinker said. “Any win you can pick up on the road is a good win.”
The Mean Green will host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in its home opener, Sunday at the Super Pit. The game will tip-off at 2 p.m.
