DENTON, Texas - The regular season for the North Texas women's basketball team begins tonight as they host Stephen F. Austin at the Super Pit at 7 p.m.
The game can be heard on 88.1 FM KNTU and seen live on www.meangreensports.com
Stephen F. Austin is coming off a season in which they won 18 games and made an appearance in the WNIT. North Texas is picked to finish fourth in the Sun Belt Conference West Division while SFA was selected to finish third in the Southland Conference West Division.
North Texas is 19-15 all-time in season opening games. This is the first year North Texas will open the season at home since 2005-06, ironically against Stephen F. Austin. That was a 71-65 win and the start of a 19-win season for the Mean Green.
Jasmine Godbolt turned in perhaps the most complete performance by a true freshman in school history.
A quick look back shows that Godbolt left her mark in just about every corner of the record books. Godbolt set the freshman record for most double-doubles with nine, the freshman rebounding record with 256. She scored 364 points, the most by a freshman in 11 seasons.
She set a school record with 183 free throw attempts last season and made 108, which is the second most by a freshman and the most by a freshman in a single season since 1995-96. Godbolt won the Freshman of the Year award, becoming only the second player in school history to win the award.
Newcomer Alyssa Hankins was brought in to run the North Texas offense at the point guard spot and in the exhibition game against TWU she did just that. While scoring 16 points, Hankins was also busy handing out seven assists in the game.
If it was a regular season game it would have been the most assists handed out by a North Texas player since January 31, 2008.
