DENTON, Texas- North Texas used a career-high 21 points from Jasmine Godbolt to defeat defending Southland Conference champions Stephen F. Austin 78-75 in the season opener Friday night at the Super Pit.
Stephen F. Austin rallied from a 61-47 deficit with 9:34 remaining in the game to tie the game at 74 on a Antoinette Davis layup with 45 seconds left in the game. Jasmine Godbolt hit a layup on the ensuing possession to put the Mean Green up for good with 24 seconds remaining in the game.
Two Desiree Nelson free throws extended the North Texas lead to three with 4 seconds left in the game. Stephen F. Austin missed a desperation three pointer to send the game into overtime as time expired.
North Texas (1-0) won its season opener for the first time since 2005-06, which was a 71-65 win over Stephen F. Austin at the Super Pit. The 2005 game against Stephen F. Austin was also the last time North Texas opened at home. North Texas now has a seven winning streak when opening the season at home, dating back to 1995-96. This is only the second time North Texas has beaten Stephen F. Austin (0-1) in the series.
North Texas had four players score in double figures, as Godbolt, Nelson, Denetra Kellum and Ash'Lynne Evans all reached that plateau. Kasondra Foreman scored nine points and led North Texas with five assists.
North Texas led by as many as 18 points, after a 9-0 run in the second half that consisted of three pointers on three consecutive possessions.
The Mean Green now embark on an eight game road trip that begins on Sunday, November 14 at Oral Roberts at 4 p.m., with the broadcast on KNTU, 88.1 FM. North Texas returns to the Super Pit on December 8 as they play host to Sam Houston State.
