DENTON, Texas (11/11/08) Senior Jo Hall posted a double-double to lead the North Texas women’s basketball team to an 85-77 exhibition victory against TWU on Tuesday night at the Super Pit.
Mean Green head coach Shanice Stephens made her coaching debut and is now 1-0 in exhibition games at North Texas.
TWU kept it close for most of the first half, but North Texas slowly increased its lead as the game wore on. Hall scored six of NT’s last nine points of the first half to give the Mean Green a 48-40 lead.
North Texas opened the second half with a 14-7 run, extending its lead to 62-47. Twelve Mean Green players saw action in the game, including five newcomers, but the home team was still able to maintain its lead in the second half.
Hall led four players in double figures with 18 points. She also pulled down a team-high 14 rebounds. Yari Escalera and Tricia Lee also scored in double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Freshman Brittani Bailey led the newcomers with 12 points and six rebounds. The Mean Green shot 47.3 percent from the field in the game.
Mansa El also had a nice debut for North Texas, scoring nine points and pulling down eight rebounds. She started a 10-2 run midway through the first half with four straight points after TWU tied the game at 14-14. Bailey capped the run with a layup to give North Texas an eight-point lead, 24-16.
North Texas led by as many as 16 points in the second half.
Jessica Durr of TWU led all scorers with 25 points. Renee Renz followed with 23 points and 12 rebounds.
The Mean Green forced 19 steals and held the edge in rebounds, 56 to 43.
North Texas opens its season on Monday, Nov. 17 when the Mean Green faces Marshall on the road at 6 pm.
