DENTON (11/10/04) - Three Mean Green players scored in double figures to lead the North Texas women’s basketball team to a 95-79 exhibition win against the Oklahoma Flyers on Wednesday night in the Super Pit.
The Mean Green closed out its exhibition series with a 1-1 record and opens up the regular season on Friday, Nov. 19 against Binghamton.
"I feel like we played much better tonight," said head coach Tina Slinker. "We played much more like a team tonight than the first game. We were able to settle in early, get comfortable and play like we have been practicing."
Sophomore Mia Ajekwu led the scoring with 18 points, while classmate Kelsie Edwards followed with 17. Junior Erika Bobo joined the duo in double figures with 15 points and eight rebounds.
The Mean Green jumped out ahead in the first half and steadily increased its lead in the second period. After keeping it close for the first 10 minutes, the Mean Green went on a 8-0 run, capped by a Ajekwu basket to take a 30-20 advantage. North Texas closed out the half with a 14-4 run, including six points by Edwards, for a 44-30 halftime score.
Edwards started a 16-9 run at the beginning of the second half with a layup to extend NT’s lead to 21 -- 60-39. The Flyers were unable to break the Mean Green’s double digit lead for the remainder of the game.
North Texas shot 46.2 percent from the field, compared to the Flyers’ 43.5 percent. The Mean Green also scored 42 points off rebounds, while the Oklahoma Flyers managed only 17.
The Mean Green returns to action on Friday, Nov. 19 with its first regular-season game against Binghamton in the Super Pit.
