ROCK HILL, S.C. (11/9/07) Winthrop used a red-hot second half to pull away from the North Texas women’s basketball team 77-56 in the opening game of the Winthrop Classic. Winthrop, trailing 41-38 with 12:22 remaining in the game, went on a 13-0 run over the next three minutes and the Mean Green never recovered.
“It was a little bit disappointing that we let them go on that run but we have to be stronger if we are going to win games like this,” said head coach Tina Slinker.
A back and forth game quickly turned ugly for North Texas after making a 9-0 run to behind the second half and take a 35-31 lead.
The Mean Green however could not hold that lead and was held to just 10 points over the next 11 minutes and Winthrop seized control. When the run ended for Winthrop the lead was 75-49 with just over four minutes to play in the game.
Three players scored in double figures for North Texas led by Jo Hall’s 15 points. Brittney James scored 11 points and had three 3-pointers while Amber Jackson poured in 10 points.
North Texas faces the Rice Owls tomorrow afternoon in the second game of the Winthrop Classic at 12 p.m.
